As Israelis await the shape of their next government, Professor and Director of the Critical Issues Poll, Shibley Telhami releases the results of a fresh round of data fielded with Ipsos October 23-25 that probes American public attitudes of the Israeli-American relationship and how it might be impacted by the results of the Israeli elections.
The poll found more Americans say that the Israeli-US relationship is a liability, 39%, than say it is an asset, 26%, for American national interests. In contrast, more Americans say the US-Saudi relationship is an asset than a liability, and majorities say that US relations with Canada and Britain are an asset for American interests.
Most Americans also say the shape of the next Israeli government would not affect their assessment of Israel, the US-Israeli relationship, or Israeli policies. A majority of Americans, including half of Republicans and a majority of Democrats, also say Israel influenced the US decision to wage war with Iran. And more than four out of ten Americans planning to vote say the US relationship with Israel will impact (“a lot” or "moderately”) how they vote in the midterm elections.
